What qualifications are required to practice as a Credentialled Diabetes Educator?
Credentialled Diabetes Educators (CDEs) listed within this website’s Find a CDE are all members of ADEA. Practising members of ADEA must be registered with the relevant Board for their primary discipline and abide by their code of conduct. ADEA members must also uphold the ADEA code of conduct, which complements the code of conduct for their primary discipline. Around 1,800 practicing CDEs are members of ADEA.
Entry to practise as a Credentialled Diabetes Educator is through a post graduate certificate in diabetes management and education that is approved by ADEA for the purposes of registration, and completion of ADEA’s credentialling program which includes practical experience in diabetes education, a mentoring program, and assessments of professional and clinical practice. To register, and then maintain their annual registration, CDEs must meet professional standards such as recent practice, continuing professional education, and work in accordance with ADEA’s Code of Conduct. CDEs must also be covered by professional indemnity insurance while practicing.
