This microcredential is part of a series designed to enhance your knowledge and skills in the pharmacological management of diabetes. It provides a comprehensive overview of glucose lowering agents used in diabetes management, focusing on their goals, types, and management strategies. It covers the principles of Quality Use of Medicines (QUM) and addresses the various classes of glucose-lowering agents (GLAs), their pharmacological actions, and the factors influencing medication choices in diabetes management.

The content covered in this microcredential is designed to be relevant for CDEs practicing in all parts of Australia, from rural and remote areas to metropolitan regions.   

This microcredential is suited for Credentialled Diabetes Educators (CDEs) who support people living with diabetes in a variety of environments, including clinics, hospitals, community spaces, and private practices, among others.   

It is also important that CDEs practice within their role and scope.

Learning Objectives   
After completing this course you will be able to:   

- Explain the goals of diabetes medication management.
- Apply the principles of Quality Use of Medicines (QUM) to ensure that diabetes medications are used safely, effectively and appropriately within clinical practice.
- Identify various classes of glucose-lowering agents (GLAs) and explain their pharmacological actions. This includes biguanides, sulphonylureas, SGLT2 inhibitors, DPP-4 inhibitors, GLP-1 receptor agonists, thiazolidinediones, and alpha-glucosidase inhibitors. 
- Identify factors influencing the choice of oral medications used in type 2 diabetes management.
- Describe potential interactions and adverse effects of glucose-lowering agents.
- Describe appropriate administration methods for diabetes medications, including GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy.
- Identify barriers to taking diabetes medications and develop strategies to manage these risks. 

The knowledge gained from this course will help to improve health outcomes, quality of live and overall wellbeing for people living with diabetes.   

Course outline   
This online course is designed for you to complete at your own pace. We recommend that you allow at least 2 hours to complete learning content and activities.   

This microcredential has been accredited for 2 hours of Category 1 CPD or 2 CPD points, applicable to an individuals CPD plan upon successful completion of assessment.   

Assessment   
The course assessment consists of 15 multiple choice questions. To successfully complete the course and receive a certificate and digital badge, participants must achieve a pass mark of 80% or higher.
